Located in the north central part of Georgia, Barrow County lies just outside the Atlanta-Metro area and is quickly becoming a draw to people who want a smaller-town, quieter pace of life but with the convenience of metropolitan-area amenities nearby.

History

The area we know today as Barrow County was a frontier region in the 1700s. Now a state park, Fort Yargo was built in 1792 for settlers in the area. Winder, the county seat, was known as Jug Tavern at the time. With the expansion of rail into the region in the 1880s, Barrow hosted two railroads: the Seaboard Air Line and Gainesville and Midland. The Georgia General Assembly changed the name of the town from Jug Tavern to Winder in 1893 to honor one of the railroad builders, John C. Winder of North Carolina.

Barrow County was created from portions of Gwinnett, Jackson, and Walton counties via a voter-approved constitutional amendment on November 3, 1914. Barrow County then became the 149th Georgia county out of 159. Barrow County was named after David Crenshaw Barrow, Jr. a University of Georgia mathematics and engineering professor who was later Chancellor, serving in that position from 1906 to 1925.

More recently, Barrow residents have seen a coordinated effort to increase economic development in the area, with a dedicated team working on bringing business to the county. It’s proximity to transportation hubs makes it an attractive location for employers around the country.
